Reflexion:

Is the building functional?

Wohnregal is highly functional, ever changing and adapting to the needs of its surroundings and inhabitants. Every intervention has been a conscious decision to improve the buildings positive impact on its residents, the local communities and the environment.

What are its qualities?

With the constant possible layout changes and a growing structure Wohnregal accommodates to a growing number of residents and sets an example in flexible living. By opening up the lower levels to the neighborhood and growing an urban garden up top, the building creates a strong sense of community and stands up against old, big city stereotypes and anonymity.

What are its weaknesses?

Its strong industrial concrete structure is key to the building’s versatility. Though it is not without flaws, it guarantees a long lifespan from its original erection in 2019. Yet its expiration might be inevitable. Careful measures have to be taken to preserve and restore its bearing structure, so the huge amount of concrete doesn’t become a problem in the far future.

Urban development & structure

Although Wohnregal has changed externally, the original concept and qualities have been picked up and amplified. The façade has been replaced by an environmentally friendly and energy efficient alternative, which is just as functional as its predecessor. While the buildings structure is literally growing in form of a timber structure on top, the urban layout barely changes and is merely adding minor structures in the perimeter block development.

Has the Case- Study proven to be an adaptable, resilient system ?

A lot has changed in the past 31 one years and Wohnregal doesn’t seem particularly sustainable at first glance. Yet its adaptability and long- term modifications continue to set an example in sustainable development and health related quality of life for its inhabitants and neighborhood.

It emphasizes the importance of the future role of the architect, to carefully consider material choices, environmental and social impact, as well as sustainable design to minister to the public.
