SE – Sun, Light and the Architectural Space

Modern architecture is often considered as an aide that helped in creating the pathway towards an architecture that is characterized by its independence from the surrounding climate which goes hand in hand with its dependency on energy-operated environmental control systems. However, this perspective neglects the fact that many protagonists of the modern movement embraced architectural science, thereby aiming towards the integration of passive environmental control systems into their architectural design. In this class, we will acquire and work with primary and secondary literature that will help us to identify the position of selected architects. We will then juxtapose our findings to a rigorous architectural study of the built work, thereby developing a critical perspective towards the influence of environmental parameters on the creation of architectural space.
